Celebrated British Designer Gets Standing Ovation

Margaret Calvert was originally from South Africa and returned there recently to speak at Design Indaba in Cape Town.

In the 1960s, Margaret Calvert designed an entirely new signage system for the UK’s roads – possibly the biggest graphic design job ever – as well as the Transport font, and the Rail Alphabet font used on the British railways.

We caught up with her after the keynote which included a couple of entertaining stories from her fascinating career. An extraordinary woman and still a creative tour de force at 80.
